About Farol de Porto de Pedras
The Farol de Porto de Pedras (lighthouse) stands on top of the Morro de Nossa Senhora da Piedade (hill), right next to the town center, on the north coast of Alagoas. It is one of the town's symbols and can be seen from many points on the region's beaches.
According to the Brazilian Navy, the lighthouse opened in 1933, initially running on acetylene gas, and was electrified in 1973. It is still in operation as a navigation aid on the Alagoas coast.
What draws visitors is the view from the top of the hill. From there you can see the town center, the waterfront lined with coconut palms, the neighboring beaches and the mouth of the Manguaba River, where the river water meets the sea. At low tide, sandbanks appear in the sea. Late afternoon is the most popular time, for the sunset.
The tower belongs to the Navy and has no organized visits; you explore the open area at the top of the hill. The climb is short but steep. It is a good stop if you are already in town and enjoy viewpoints and photography.
