About Theatro da Paz
The Theatro da Paz is Belém's great historic theater and one of the most beautiful in Brazil. It stands on Praça da República, downtown, and still operates as a venue for opera, concerts, ballet and plays, as well as opening its doors for guided tours.
It opened on February 15, 1878, at the height of the rubber boom, when wealth from latex transformed the city. It is considered the first large theater in the Amazon. The building is neoclassical, with a facade of columns and busts, and was renovated in the early 20th century.
On the guided tour, the group goes through the lobby, climbs the marble staircase, enters the horseshoe-shaped auditorium with several tiers of boxes, and reaches the Salão Nobre (grand salon) and the front balcony. The guide tells the story of the building and how society of the time used the theater. Crystal chandeliers, ceiling paintings and floors of fine woods stand out.
The tour is short and has stairs, so ask about accessibility in advance. Seeing a performance is another way to experience the theater, and the program changes throughout the year.
