About Mangal das Garças

The Mangal das Garças is a park on the bank of the Guamá River, on the edge of Belém's historic center. It opened in 2005 in an area that was once flooded and covered by mangroves, and today it brings together ponds, gardens and samples of the Amazon environments of Pará: upland forest, floodplain forest and grasslands.

The visit begins on the paths between the ponds, where egrets and scarlet ibises roam freely, very close to passersby. Turtles and other animals appear along the banks. It is a quiet, flat place that is easy to explore, good if you are traveling with children or older people.

Some areas have supervised visits: the Farol de Belém, a tower with a viewpoint looking out over the whole city and the bay; the José Márcio Ayres Butterfly House, with butterflies flying freely; the Viveiro das Aningas, an aviary where you walk among the birds; and the Memorial Amazônico da Navegação, about the region's boats.

On the riverbank, the Mirante do Rio is a walkway that juts out over the vegetation and shows the Guamá up close. The park also has a restaurant and a souvenir shop.
