A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Baixada Verde is a tourist region of the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. Magé is the municipality included in this guide selection. Visits focus on railway heritage, historic sites and the city’s relationship with the Baía de Guanabara.

In Mauá, the Estação Guia de Pacobaíba is a landmark of Brazil’s first railway. Interest in this heritage requires knowing its location and current access possibilities, without confusing a visit to the site with the offering of an operating railway ride.

Mauá’s waterfront and the mangroves of the Parque Natural Municipal Barão de Mauá add to the coastal landscape. In Magé’s municipal seat, the Igreja Senhor do Bonfim is among the historical references. Separate these activities by area to avoid back-and-forth trips between the seat and Mauá.

How to get there: Baixada Verde

Those arriving at Aeroporto do Galeão continue by road to Magé. The BR-116 and BR-493 are access references to the municipality. Decide whether your first destination will be the municipal seat or Mauá; municipal transport links these areas, and their operation should be confirmed before traveling.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

Look for stable weather to observe Mauá’s waterfront and walk the heritage sites in Magé. Visiting the Parque Natural Municipal Barão de Mauá should align with its schedule and the possibility of reception. On rainy days, don’t expect to spontaneously replace the outing with access to the mangroves.

How many days to stay

Allow two days for Magé: the first for the municipal seat’s heritage and the second for the Estação Guia de Pacobaíba and Mauá’s waterfront. Visiting Parque Barão de Mauá only takes place with confirmed reception; set aside specific time for it if the activity requires a separate departure.

Which city to stay in

In Magé’s municipal seat, choose accommodation based on proximity to the urban program and transport to Mauá. If the station and the waterfront are priorities, find a location that reduces that transfer. It is also possible to base yourself in the city of Rio de Janeiro and do separate outings, taking round-trip traffic into account.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Frequently asked questions about Baixada Verde

Is Baixada Verde a park?

It is a tourist region that brings together municipalities of the Baixada Fluminense. The Parque Natural Municipal Barão de Mauá is a specific area of Magé, with its own visiting rules.

Is the Estação Guia de Pacobaíba located in Magé's municipal seat?

The station is in the Mauá area. Plan the trip there separately from the visit to the Igreja Senhor do Bonfim in the municipal seat.

Is there a guaranteed train ride at the historic station?

The focus of the visit is the railway heritage. The presence of a historic station does not guarantee an operating tourist train service.

Can I enter the Parque Barão de Mauá without booking?

Check the schedule and the possibility of reception before going. A stroll along the waterfront does not substitute for that confirmation to enter the park area.
